A five week course suitable for mums who are at least six weeks postnatal, with babies up until they are mobile.
Yoga mats and blocks etc are provided but you might want to bring a water bottle for yourself, your baby’s own blanket for them to lie on, and perhaps a favourite toy or comforter. Please wear clothes you can move easily in: the class is done in bare feet.
The aim of these classes is for you to have an enjoyable and relaxing time, whilst improving your physical and emotional wellbeing. Women are encouraged to do whatever they need to be comfortable – please don’t feel your baby has to ‘behave’! It can take two or three sessions for both mothers and babies to get used to Mother & Baby Yoga. Usually everyone settles once they find out how relaxed these sessions are.
You will get ideas of things you can do at home with your baby to help your postnatal recovery as well as improving stability and strength. Over the weeks you will ease yourself back into exercise, regain strength in the pelvic and abdominal areas, also loosening your upper body; your neck, shoulders and upper back as these can become particularly tight as you feed, hold and carry your baby. You will also be encouraging your baby to gain strength and develop their reflexes and motor skills; whilst enjoying the company of other new mums and babies.
The sessions run for 60 minutes and will usually include some or all of the following: o introduction round at the start of each session o exercises for women lying down, then sitting, all fours and standing, including moves for mum and baby and often combining the two. o throughout the session we will take the opportunity to sing some nursery rhymes – a great way to re-learn childhood songs and learn new ones to share with your baby o tummy time for baby (depending on how many are awake or asleep) o parachute games/bubbles o structured relaxation - lying or sitting. Don’t worry if you think your baby will make too much noise - as the weeks go by babies often get used to having this quiet time. You can feed or cuddle your baby, or walk around during the relaxation if you need to.
